When you surf around on the internet, you normally use your browser (Internet Explore, Netscape etc.),
and it is created to handle HTTP-traffic - HyperText Transfer Protocol. The UseNet use NNTP - Net News Transfer Protocol - and that protocol was developed long before the HTTP. Your browser is actually a client program to handle HTTP, and in same way you need a client program to handle NNTP, and that is what, we call a "newsreader". Windows users have Outlook Express, and that program can be used to read messages from the UseNet, but it is not very recommended to use it for anything else, than just text-messages. The most files - pics, videos and programs - are posted as binary attachments encoded with yEnc, and it is difficult to use Outlook Express with the yEnc-decoding. So you need a newsreader, which handle the yEnc-decoding by itself. If you make a Google search for newsreaders, you will get a damned lot of hits, so it is hard to recommend a single one, and many of them are not free. I guess Forte Agent was one of the first newreaders, and very popular, but the free version do not handle yEnc! You can get a serial/key here: http://www.serialz.to/serials2000.html, but remember it is not legal. Personal I use "PowerGrab" from http://www.cosmicwolf.com/cosmicwolf/default.asp, it is free and easy to use, but there site is under construction, so I guees, it is ok to give you the program here: POWER-GRAB-2002-v2_6-RC1.ZIP But feel free to select your own newsreader!! |
